plug

the plug independent music awards are coming up in february.
i think a lot of people just don't get what plug is, or what
they're trying to do. they're trying to create a community
for independent musicians, to gain some of the attention they
deserve. before they came along nobody was doing awards for
independent music. they keep that spirit alive by letting fans
vote for who wins. also in their nomination process, they
pick 200 people from all different areas ofthe independent music
community, which keeps it as fair as possible. oh yeah,
and they have a box where you can make suggestions, rant if you
think someone got left out, et cetera. which is rad. the best part is
that even if you can't make the awards, you can still vote for
who you think should win at www.plugawards.com

i think it's cool.

music review

currently being whisked away by the breathy bossanova of nouvelle vague.
their covers of punk, post punk and new wave gems are both intimate and intricate.
come on, dead kennedys, modern english, the clash, and joy division covered by
sweet whisps of vocals? i feel like i should be lying on a beach in some faraway
land in the dusk. i can feel the dew forming now. it came out in 2004 on peace frog
and it feels like this...fire in the belly like when half the bottle's gone and it's midnight.

music

please check back periodically for random music reviews.
i'll start with ariel pink's haunted graffiti "house arrest" (paw tracks-look for it in the 06).
ariel pink, b. ariel rosenberg, los angeles native, befriended lo-fi underground cult hero r. stevie moore, uses guitars keys bass and vocals but no drums. 8-track sensitizing virtuoso, pop sensibility-maker.

how to describe...well take weird snippets of songs that might be familiar, but really, is it just
a flashback? the world may never know, but ariel pink will tell them anyway. garage doesn't cover it at all, nor does pop-no, that won't do at all. take the two and sample a little and turn back the clock to think back to your first psychedelic experience and maybe you're almost there. remember what the music sounded like while under the influence? that's what it sounds like to me. all swirly and strange and beautiful and not quite making sense at first but then somewhere along the way there's some sort of epiphany and it clicks and you get it. weird and wonderful.
look for its release in 2006, but if you need your ariel pink fix now, you can find
The Doldrums (2004) and Worn Copy (2005) at insound.
